Our History

The story of First Baptist Church of Sunny Side is one of God’s enduring faithfulness through generations.

Our congregation was founded in 1840 as Tirzah Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. U.D. Singleton, B.F. Yarbrough, L.D. Akins, G.D. Dunn, and W.B. Slaughter. From its earliest days, the church was established to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ, faithfully teach God’s Word, and serve the surrounding community.

Throughout more than 180 years of ministry, God has sustained this church through both seasons of blessing and seasons of challenge. In 1951, the church was rebuilt, marking a new chapter in its history. Since then, the congregation has weathered a devastating fire and multiple tornadoes. Through every trial, the Lord has faithfully preserved both the church and its mission, providing strength, hope, and opportunities for continued ministry.

While First Baptist Church of Sunny Side is deeply rooted in its rich history, it is also a church filled with new life. We remain committed to faithfully proclaiming the unchanging truth of Scripture while reaching each new generation with the hope of the Gospel.

As a church affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention, we partner with fellow believers to advance the Gospel in our local community, throughout Georgia, across the United States, and around the world. Through cooperative missions, church planting, disaster relief, evangelism, and ministry partnerships, we join thousands of churches in fulfilling Christ’s Great Commission.

At the heart of who we are is a simple guiding principle:

“In Essentials, Unity; in Non-Essentials, Liberty; in All Things, Love.”

This conviction shapes how we live and minister together. We joyfully stand united with all followers of Christ who affirm the authority of God’s Word and the essential truths of the Christian faith. In areas where Scripture does not clearly define a single position, we seek to extend grace, understanding that while “everything is permissible,” not everything is beneficial. Above all, we desire that every word, every ministry, and every relationship be marked by the love of Christ, reflecting the very heart of the Gospel.
